Golden syrup dumplings

Ingredients
150g self-raising flour
60g butter, cut into cubes
1 egg
30ml milk
375ml water
45g butter
300g brown sugar
180g golden syrup
1 lemon, juiced
Method
Sift the flour into a bowl and then rub in the butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs
Beat the egg with the milk and pour into the flour mixture
Combine to form a dough, then divide and shape into 12 small balls
To make the syrup mix together the water, butter, sugar, golden syrup and lemon juice in a medium size saucepan and bring to the boil
Carefully add the dough balls to the syrup and simmer for 15-20 minutes
Serve warm with syrup, cream or ice cream
Making and shaping the dough is a fabulous job for the kids after the homework is done
Any extra syrup can be used to pour over fresh or poached fruit as a quick winter dessert
